AIZAWL: Peace Day or Remni Ni is being observed in the state of Mizoram in remembrance of the people who ushered an environment of peace in the state and reminding the people of the importance of the same. This day commemorates the signing of the historic Mizoram Peace Accord which brought an end to the 20-year-long uprising in the state of Mizoram on its 37th anniversary.

The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga took to Twitter and mentioned,” Greetings to all the people of Mizoram on the occasion of the 37th Anniversary of the Mizoram Peace Accord. The historic Mizoram Peace Accord signed in 1986 was the most time-tested exemplary accord not only in the country but also in the world, which has lasted till date. Since then, Mizoram Accord has become an exemplary peace accord. Many neighbouring states and countries also take it as a model of peace. Today, I implore my fellow Mizos to take pride in this gift of God we received, and to preserve it for generations to come. Only through PEACE can we have real and stable growth and development.”

The Mizoram Peace Accord was signed on June 30, 1986, between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front (MNF) to end insurgency and violence in the northeastern state.

Lalruatkima, the minister of Information and Public Relations in Mizoram earlier inaugurated an outstanding photo exhibition dedicated to the historic agreement in the grounds of the Vanapa Hall in the capital city. The exhibition also offers an insight into the past of the state along with the conditions that led to the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord, the moments of its signing as well as the conditions that followed offering a glimpse into the turbulent history and the following peace in the state.
