AIZAWL: In the war against drugs, another major drug haul was made by Mizoram police and Assam Rifles, during which 14,600 tablets (1.46 kgs) of Methamphetamine worth Rs 3 crore have been seized in Aizawl in Mizoram.

According to the Mizoram police, 35-year-old drug peddler Lianchithanga was apprehended for possession of the contraband comprising Methamphetamine tablets, also known by the street name of Yaba.

On the receipt of a tip off, special narcotics squad personnel from Aizawl police station and personnel of Assam Rifles conducted a joint operation at Falkland Veng area in Northeast part of Aizawl.

14,600 tablets of Methamphetamine worth Rs 3 crore in the international market was seized during the operation, from the possession of Lianchithanga, a resident of Kanan Veng in Champhai district of Mizoram.

The accused has been booked under relevant sections of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Mizoram police said.

Further investigation to root out the source and destination of the contraband is on, the Mizoram police said.

Earlier, On April 3, at least 50 packets containing five lakh Yaba tables worth crores of rupees were seized from a Mizoram-bound vehicle in Silchar town on Monday, an official said, adding that two people were arrested in connection. According to the police, the vehicle had entered Assam through the inter-state border in Cachar. A senior police officer said that based on a tip-off, police apprehended the vehicle. The narcotics were peddled from Myanmar.

“At least 50 packets containing the Yaba tablets were recovered,” the officer said, adding that market value of the seized drugs is in crores. Two persons were also arrested on the charges of drug peddling.

Lauding the police action, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: “Cachar police recovered 50 packets containing 5 lakh Yaba tablets from a consignment coming from Myanmar via a neighbouring state at Bagador, Silchar. Also apprehended two accused. “Great work Assam Police. Keep it up.”
