Mizoram Polls: PM Modi Urges State's Youth to Vote in Assembly Elections

AIZAWL: In a passionate plea to the residents of Mizoram, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the state's citizens, with a special emphasis on the youth and first-time voters, to actively participate in the ongoing electoral process as the state embarked on its journey to the polls.

Taking to social media, Prime Minister Modi urged the people of Mizoram to turn out in unprecedented numbers at the ballot boxes, reinforcing the essential role of their votes in fortifying the democratic foundation of the nation. "I call upon the people of Mizoram to vote in record numbers. I particularly urge the young and first-time voters to exercise their franchise and strengthen the festival of democracy," he posted.

On the very same day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed this call, emphasizing the significance of the youth's vote in shaping the future of Mizoram. In his social media message, he underscored, "I urge our sisters and brothers in Mizoram, especially the youth, to come out and vote in large numbers. Each and every vote will lay the foundation of a developed and prosperous Mizoram."

However, the early hours of the Mizoram assembly elections presented a minor hiccup for Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, as he faced an issue with an electronic voting machine (EVM) that caused a brief delay in casting his own vote. Chief Minister Zoramthanga explained, "Because the machine was not working. I was waiting for some time. But since the machine could not work, I said that I will visit my constituency and I will vote after the morning meet."

A total of 174 candidates are vying for positions in the elections, and Mizoram boasts 8,51,895 registered voters, comprising 4,12,969 males, 4,38,925 females, and 1 third-gender individual. The state further accommodates 4,973 service voters and 50,611 first-time voters between the ages of 18 and 19.
