Mizoram Polls: Ruling MNF Disapproves Sunday Counting Date, Writes to CEC

AIZAWL: Following objections from the Congress party, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) has also expressed reservations about the polling counting date set for Sunday, December 3.

As per local reports, the MNF party's general headquarters has formally written to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, urging the postponement of the counting date to Monday, December 4.

The Election Commission of India recently announced the polling dates for Mizoram, along with four other states. Mizoram is scheduled to go to the polls on November 7, with the counting of votes set for December 3, coinciding with the counting dates for all five states that will undergo voting.

In the letter addressed to the CEC, T.C. Kaphminthanga, General Secretary of the MNF General Headquarters, emphasized the significance of Sunday to the Mizos, as they are "cent percent Christians." He pointed out that church meetings are held in all villages across Mizoram on Sundays.

Yesterday, the Congress party had also objected to the polling counting date due to it falling on a Sunday. Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee President Lalsawta wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, highlighting that Sunday holds a sacred place in the hearts of the people of Mizoram, dedicated entirely to the worship of God. He also noted that no official programs or business activities are conducted on Sundays in Mizoram.

In addition to the MNF and the Congress, the Mizoram Church Leaders Committee, also known as the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitu Committee (MKHC), voiced their concerns regarding the counting date being scheduled for a Sunday. The committee raised objections to the vote counting taking place on December 3, a day of significant religious importance for Christians.

As per the EC announcement, Mizoram will go to elections on November 7, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and November 17, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 23 and Telangana on November 30.
