Mizoram: Refugee Children Now Allowed Admission In Schools

Aizawl: The District Education officers and Sub-Divisional Education officers of Mizoram have been instructed by the Director of School Education, James Lalrinchhana to allow the admission of all refugee children who have migrated from Myanmar following a Military Coup in the country. The order was issued on August 31.

The Director of School Education cited Chapter 2(4) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act 2009) in a letter dated August 31, 2021, which states that "children between the age of 6 to 14 years and belonging to disadvantaged communities, the right to be admitted to school in a class appropriate to his or her age for completing elementary education."

 The concerned authorities have been directed to take necessary action to admit the refugee children that fall under their jurisdiction to schools so that they can continue their studies.

As per reports, James Lalrinchhana has stated that James Lalrinchhana said that the DEO of every district is currently registering those migrant children eligible for elementary education under the RTE Act.

On being asked if RTE applied to non-Indians as well, he further explained, "all children between the ages of 6 to 14 years-irrespective of their nationality- who are currently residing on the Indian soil are eligible for elementary education ( up to 8th standard)."
