AIZAWL: The Mizoram government has alleged that a construction worker of its state has been assaulted and abducted by Assam police from the Assam-Mizoram border area.
A letter was sent by the Kolasib deputy commissioner to the Hailakandi deputy commissioner regarding the matter. Kolasib DC H. Lalthlangliana, in the letter, alleged that a person of Mizoram Lalnarammawia, who works with a construction company, was assaulted by Assam police at Aitlang, near Vairengte on Thursday. The personnel, who were in commando uniform, blindfolded him and abducted at gunpoint, the Kolasib DC alleged.
As per the letter, the incident took place on Thursday afternoon when the person Lalnarammawia and a few other people were working at a road construction site. A team of Assam police reached the spot, stopped the men from continuing the construction work and damaged an excavator which was being used for the road work. Later, Lalnarammawia who was operating the excavator was blindfolded and kidnapped from the site, the letter said.
Lalthlangliana expressed concern over the incident and suspected that it could exacerbate the tension which has prevailing along the border areas for the past many months. Further, he urged the Hailakandi DC for his intervention into the matter and for necessary measures.
The Assam-Mizoram inter-state border in the three districts of Barak Valley has been tense over the past few months because of a series of violent activities. On July 26 this year, at least six policemen of Assam were killed and several other personnel injured after bullets were fired and tear gas canisters used by Mizo forces at Lailapur in Dholai, near the border area.
