AIZAWL: The President of India inaugurated the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) North East Campus virtually. It is an autonomous Institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, currently located at Mizoram University.
IIMC North East started classes long back from a temporary building allocated by Mizoram University in 2011. Construction for the new campus started in 2015 and was completed four years later with a total cost Rs 25 Crs. This new campus is spread across an area of 8 acres allocated by the Mizoram University. Apart from the educational block, it also has separate administrative buildings, hostels and staff accommodations in the campus.
The institution started with a PG Diploma in English Journalism. The majority of students came from outside the northeastern region.And across the years, several of its alumni have been placed in major media institutions of the country as well as started their own organizations.
From the upcoming session, this institution will start a PG Diploma Course in Digital Media along with the two other Campuses of IIMC. This course is started with the current trend and significance of digital media in mind. The institute also expects more students from the northeast region of the country in the coming sessions.
Started in 1965 under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication was established as a premiere institution for journalism students in the country. Its aim is to develop the mentality of proper journalism as well as to prepare the students for the covert Indian Information Service and other examinations. It now has five campuses across the country.
The North East Campus remains under the mentorship of LR Sailo, the former Director of Information and Public Relation under the Government of Mizoram since its inception in 2011.
