AIZAWL: Acting on a tipoff, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles, under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), along with the and Custom Preventive Force of Champhai District carried out an operation and recovered 310 bags of areca nuts in the area of Tlangsam-Rauntlang in Mizoram on February 24. The approximate cost of the recovered areca nuts is Rs 52,08,000. The Customs personnel seized the contraband items.

In another such operation on February 23, personnel of the joint team had recovered 300 bags of areca nuts and 200 bags of black pepper at the Melbuk-Champhai Road in Mizoram on February 23. The approximate cost of the items is Rs 1, 00, 40,000. The Customs department seized the smuggled contraband items, stated a release.

HEROIN RECOVERED, 2 HELD: The Aizawl Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles along with members of '19 FIT ' and Excise & Narcotics Department, recovered 128 grams of heroin (No-4), from Bawngkawn Shalom area of Aizawl on February 23.

The approximate market value of the recovered narcotics is Rs 57,60,000. The Excise & Narcotics Department seized the contraband item, they also detained two individuals in this regard, stated a release.

FOREIGN CIGARETTES FOUND: Acting on specific input, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles recovered six cases of foreign origin smuggled cigarettes in the Zokhawathar area of Mizoram on February 24.

The approximate market value of the recovered items is Rs 7, 80,000. The Custom Department of Champhai seized the contraband item.

Ongoing smuggling of drugs especially along the India-Myanmar Border is a major cause of concern for Mizoram, stated a release.
