AIZAWL: In yet another success in the crusade against smuggling activities, the Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles — under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) – and the Customs Department recovered 35 cases of foreign-origin smuggled cigarettes from the Maulkawi area in Mizoram on March 28.

The operation was carried out based on specific information. The approximate market value of the recovered items is Rs 58,50,000. The Customs Preventive Force Champhai seized the contraband item and detained a person in this regard.

The ongoing smuggling of drugs and other items is a major cause of concern along the India-Myanmar Border and especially for the State of Mizoram. The Assam Rifles, rightly christened as the 'Sentinels of Northeast' have continued their efforts against the smuggling activities in Mizoram, stated a release.
