Guwahati: The Lengpui Airport in Mizoram's capital city Aizawl will be closed with from 5:00 pm on June 10 till further notice, the Mizoram Government announced on Tuesday. This is in accordance with the total lockdown guidelines notified late last night by the Government.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Mizoram Government has reverted to a total lockdown to contain the outbreak of Covid-19 amid a sudden spurt in the number of cases following the return of citizens who were stranded in other parts of the country amid the Government-imposed lockdown.
The Mizoram Government's move, that was announced after a consultative meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Zoramthanga, comes as other states opened malls, restaurants and places of worship after two months as part of the centre's 'Unlock-1' guidelines, expected to return life to normal in a "phased" manner.
"Consultative meeting chaired by CM decides to impose 2 weeks total lockdown of the state w.e.f 00:00 hours of 9th June 2020 in view of the prevailing situation. Lockdown Guidelines will be notified shortly," Mizoram's Directorate of Information and Public Relations tweeted. Subsequently, it was notified that the Mizoram Government has decided to extend the lockdown period from 14 to 21 days, just to stay on the safer side.
It is pertinent to mention here that eight more persons -- all returnees from the national capital New Delhi -- tested positive for the Covid-19 in Mizoram, taking the total number of cases up to 42. While a single patient has been discharged after recovering from the pathogen, 41 cases are still active in the Northeast India State.
With coronavirus cases across the nation continuing to tick upwards in alarming fashion, the state of Mizoram has once again chosen the safety cushion of the lockdown to mitigate the spread of the deadly pathogen. In a notification dated Sunday, June 30, the Mizoram state Government issued orders to continue the lockdown, even as the Central Government has issued new guidelines to lift the restrictions in a graded manner in areas outside the containment zones.
