AIZAWL: The Serchhip Battalion under the aegis of 23 Sector Assam Rifles and Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) conducted a 'Tree plantation drive' at the company-operating bases in Zokhawthar, Sangau and Thingsai on Monday.
The objective of this drive was to motivate the troops about the importance of trees and also of the secondary advantages like prevention of soil erosion and landslides,especially in a landslide-prone State like Mizoram. Altogether 825 saplings of various varieties including Parkia (Bitter bean), palm, orange, tamarind, lemon, guava and jackfruit were planted in and around the base premises.
It was a successful event in which troops participated with great enthusiasm; and the ownership of the plants is being entrusted to the individuals who planted the tree, stated a release.
