AIZAWL: Zoramthanga the Chief Minister of Mizoram mentioned that the Mizoram Peace Accord is one of the most exemplary political understandings not only in the country, but in the entire world.

The Mizoram Peace Accord was signed in the year 1986. Before that, the region was facing serious problems of militancy and insurgency which lasted for nearly 20 years. But there has been peace in the state since the accord was passed. And the state remains to be one of the most peaceful ones in the country.

"The Mizoram Peace Accord was the most lasting and time-tested exemplary peace accord not only in the country, but also in the world,"mentioned Chief Minister Zoramthanga. He was speaking in a Special Session of the Mizoram Assembly and was thanking the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, for her visit to the northeastern state when he made this statement.

The Chief Minister went on to add that many of its neighboring states as well as countries in the Southeast Asian region used the Mizoram Peace Accord as an example for ensuring peace in their territories.

"Mizoram has no industrial, agricultural, horticultural or other products to export. The best thing the state can export to other parts of the country is its lasting peace accord," said the chief minister.

The Mizoram Peace Accord was signed between the Government of India and the insurgent group Mizo National Front (MNF). Its signing on June 30, 1986 put an end to the militancy problem of the region, and made it the 23rd Indian state as of February 20, 1987.

The region used to be part of Assam till the year 1972. It was initially a Union Territory before becoming a full fledged state. It faced severe insurgency problems between 1966 and 1986. Thereafter the MNF decided to change itself into a political party. It contested and won the Assembly polls in 1986, 1998, 2003, and 2018.
