100% enrollment in primary education by 2030 is a must in Nagaland, says Governor R N Ravi

Kohima: Nagaland Governor R N Ravi, who is also the chief rector of Nagaland University, on Wednesday lamented that most of the youth in the state are not getting a proper education. "Things are not exactly as they should be," Ravi said. To overcome the odds, Ravi said, the government has to envision a 100% enrollment in primary education by 2030.

Speaking during the inaugural program of a national webinar on 'National Education Policy -2020 -- Strategic Roadmap for Northeast India', Ravi pointed out that 25% of students who should be enrolled in primary schools are not. 40% of the students who are enrolled in primary schools do not end up going to primary schools, Ravi said.

65% of the youth would be in high school are not getting an education, and an individual who has not gone to school "is difficult to functionally be called literate," Ravi rued.

Pointing to the shocking scenario in some schools, Ravi said that there are many schools where the number of students is actually lesser than that of teachers.

The main goal, Ravi said, is to ensure that there is a 100% enrollment in primary education by 2030. This is where the NEP 2020 will come in, expressed Ravi.

Stating that the current education system is "exam-oriented, rote learning", the Governor added that the focus of the new policy is the creation of knowledge through "research and innovation and building a strong skill base."

He further added that the NEP 2020 could help Nagaland overcome the steady decline in various indicators of human development.

Governor Ravi also urged concerned officials to make a small body to look especially into primary education "because that is where the foundation lies."
