Guwahati: A man hailing from Nagaland's commercial hub of Dimapur who had tested positive for the dreaded COVID-19 virus through Truenat passed away on Friday morning, quite possibly becoming the first COVID-19 death in the state.

It has been reported that the man had many underlying conditions which made him a high-risk case. The elderly man, a heart patient, had a pacemaker. According to reports in the media, the man died today in the morning around 6:30 am.

The dead man's sample has been sent for a RT-PCR test for confirmation that he was indeed a COVID-19 patient. The man was a resident of the Kalibari locality in the Nagaland town.

Meanwhile, India reported over 49,000 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus with 740 new deaths on Friday, marking the biggest daily surge in cases. India has so far reported 30,601 deaths from the disease, with more than 40% of these deaths coming from Maharashtra state alone.
