Mokokchung Administration Seals Border with Assam after Detection of COVID Cases in Jorhat

After the detection of coronavirus cases in Assam's Jorhat, the district administration of Mokokchung in Nagaland has sealed its inter-district check-gates at Tzutapela and Watiyongpang in a bid to contain an outbreak of the virus. 

This was intimated via a notification issued by Libawabang Jamir, the Deputy Commissioner of the district. "Whereas in view of the reported COVID-19 cases in Jorhat district Assam, the inter-state check gates at Tzutapela and Watiyongpang are hereby sealed without any exceptions and all movement of people and vehicles across aforementioned gates are hereby banned with immediate effect", read the communique.

The district administration has also notified that "any person/group acting in violation of this order shall be deemed to have committed an offense punishable under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code."

It needs mention here that two ladies and the driver of the ambulance in which they had come from Mumbai to Jorhat on Friday, tested positive for COVID19 at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) on Saturday. After this information was made public, the driver was sent back to Mumbai and 2 of the patients have been kept at the JMCH since their arrival in Jorhat. The driver, en route to Mumbai, was stopped at Bihar when the news initially broke. He has now been kept at a medical facility for his treatment.

Shedding some further light on the situation, Biswa Sarma later wrote that "the ambulance entered Assam with proper permission to bring back one blood cancer patient from Jorhat who happens to be the son of one of the positive patients".

Meanwhile, the number of cases in Assam has now risen to 62. While 27 of the cases are 'active', 34 patients have been discharged after undergoing treatment at medical facilities.
