GUWAHATI: Former Nagaland chief minister and NPF leader TR Zeliang in a meeting with the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated his commitment to the fight against COVID19 before and after assuming office.

Further, the MLA also expressed hope that the Assam CM in his new capacity will continue to act as the catalyst in resolving the protracted Naga Political Issue.

It is to be mentioned here that, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is also the convenor of the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and has been actively involved in the Naga Peace Process.

Meanwhile, earlier in February 2021, the Nagaland Assembly has formed a seven-member drafting committee on the Naga political issue that has been hanging for more than two decades.

Set up by Speaker Sharingain Longkumer on February 16, the panel comprises MLAs from ruling and Opposition parties, besides an independent.

After the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), declared a ceasefire, several rounds of talks took place, however it failed to yield a solution to the political problem, apart from the August 2015 Framework Agreement between the Centre and the NSCN (IM) and the November 2017 Agreed Position between the Centre and the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs).

The union government has been holding two separate parleys with the Naga negotiators NSCN(IM) since 1997 and Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) comprising of seven groups since 2017.
