Nagaland Showcases Best Horticulture Tag with Flower Exhibition

Guwahati: A Flower Show cum Exhibition and Competition is organised at Dimapur by the Dimapur District Floricultural Association (DDFA) in collaboration with Nagaland Flowers Growers Society and co-sponsored by Department of Horticulture, at Urban Haat.

Stating that the farmers and flower growers have a big role in transforming the state into city of dreams, Mhathung Yanthan, Advisor, Horticulture Department, Government of Nagaland who was present on the inaugural ceremony as a special invitee urged upon the flower growers to be a part of the change and help in mitigating climate change. He further expressed his concerns on the deteriorating environment and urged the farmers and flower growers to get involved and become a part of the change to mitigate climate change.

Highlighting the prospect of the horticulture, Yanthan informed that the government of India has assigned the horticulture industry as a “sunrise industry” with 100 percent export oriented status, he urged the flower growers to get involved with regional and national forums to acquire new methods and gain recognition.

Floriculture is one of the most profitable industries with high and quick returns. With great weather and natural taste in aesthetic among Naga women, Nagaland has the perfect condition for the floriculture industry. Floriculture is also a great opportunity for alternative income generation.

Nagaland was recently declared the ‘Best Horticulture State’ at the 11th Global Agriculture Leadership Summit and Leadership Awards 2018. The award was adjudged by a very prestigious panel including MS Swaminathan, world renowned geneticist and architect of the ‘Green Revolution.’ Yanthan dedicated this award to the hardworking farmers and flower growers urging them to ensure that standard and quality of the product do not diminish.

Abeny Ezung, President DDA , delivering the keynote address stated it has been a long cherished dream and it was in 2005 when the association was established with the help of the department of horticulture and well-wishers. The association now boasts of more than 60 members. Nagas have a natural interest in flowers and its aesthetic values, she adds.

The inaugural program which began with the invocation by Moamongla Aier, Associate Pastor, DABA, Dimapur, was chaired by Watila Longkumer. The Flower Show cum Exhibition and Competition was declared open by the special invitee at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the end of the inaugural programme.

Fourteen categories of flowers were exhibited and up for competition while there were twenty and thirty-six entries respectively for landscape and stall competition.
