KOHIMA: During a program hosted by the Social Welfare Department in the Secretariat conference hall on November 29, officers and staff of the Civil Secretariat Nagaland made a commitment to end all forms of violence against women in their homes, communities, workplaces, and online.

According to a DIRP report, development commissioner R Ramakrishnan, who attended the event, stated that although there haven't been any reports of violence against women in Nagaland up to this point, urgent action should be taken to end it. In order for everyone to live in peace, he therefore urged all groups of people to assist those who are victims of domestic abuse and in need of assistance. Ramakrishnan asked the attendees to continue the program in the districts, underscoring its importance even further.

It should be mentioned that Nagaland will be celebrating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 and that a 16-day campaign against gender-based violence will begin on December 10 in honor of International Human Rights Day.

Previously, the ‘Seven Sisters Development Assistance’ (SeSTA) marked the ‘International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women’ at Sahitya Sabha Bhavan at Mangaldai in Assam. The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness about the various forms of violence that women encounter and educate them on preventive measures to eradicate such acts. Senior journalist Mayukh Goswami taking part in it emphasized the significance of financial independence as a key pillar in empowering women. Commending the efforts of SeSTA, he shared real-life stories from his professional experience to illustrate the diverse types and gravity of violence against women.

Social activist Rashmi Rekha Sharma, in her speech, shed light on the various local institutions that provide assistance to survivors of gender-based violence. She emphasized the importance of educating boys about gender-based violence, stating that it is crucial for societal change. Senior advocate Jugal Kr. Saikia elucidated on different acts pertaining to gender-based violence and outlined ways through which individuals can benefit from these legal provisions. Rumi Tarafdar, a constitutional fellow supported by the Azim Premji Foundation, shared her journey as a fellow, contributing valuable insights to the programme.
