KOHIMA: The Nationalist Congress Party which managed to secure the 3rd highest number of seats in the recently declared results of the Nagaland Assembly, will become the leader of the opposition parties in the state of Nagaland.

The local Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party secured the highest 25 seats while its pre-poll alliance partner the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to secure another 12 seats. Thus bringing the total number of seats to 37, which is 6 more than the required number of 31 seats.

The Nationalist Congress Party with a total of 7 seats which is also the 3rd highest number of seats in the assembly. It was followed by the National People’s Party which claimed 5 seats, also four independent candidates also managed to win in the state. The Lok Janshakti Party(Ram Vilas), the Naga Peoples Front and the Republican Party of India (Athawale) managed to claim two seats each. Thus making way for the Nationalist Congress Party to form the opposition in the state.

“This is the result of our hard work in northeast India over the past 10 years. I had travelled across Nagaland for the past four months and especially concentrated on the state’s eastern parts. The people of Nagaland have entrusted us with their votes and we will be holding a meeting of our legislative party within two days to decide on the leader of the Opposition,” mentioned Narendra Verma, Nationalist Congress Party general secretary for the Northeast.

He also mentioned it to be a good achievement for the party as they had won seven out of the total 12 seats that they had contested in and also the losing margin was very minute for the states that they failed to win.
