GUWAHATI: Massive amounts of drugs valued at more than Rs 400 crore were confiscated from two nearby northeastern states—Mizoram and Assam—on Wednesday, and three men were arrested, officials said.
A residence in east Mizoram's Champhai town, which borders Myanmar, was searched, and 39 lakh tablets of certain brands of decongestant and antihistamine valued at Rs 390.4 crore were seized.
They claimed it to be one of the largest drug seizures in the state.
While antihistamines are frequently used to treat allergy symptoms, decongestant medications offer temporary relief from nasal congestion.
According to a police officer, heroin worth over Rs 12 crore was discovered in a car in the Karimganj area of Assam.
The package was shipped from Aizawl to be delivered some place in Myanmar to be used to create methamphetamine pills, which would have then been smuggled back into India, according to a statement from the Assam Rifles and the Customs Department, who conducted the search in Mizoram.
A 41-year-old man was detained in Champhai's Ruantlang district for having the illegal substance.
The accused were presented in the Customs Department for additional legal proceedings along with the drugs that had been seized.
According to Partha Pratim Das, the superintendent of police in Karimganj, the heroin found in Assam was also coming from Aizawl. After a tip-off, the police started an operation in the Veterbond neighborhood near the Ratabari police station and stopped a car traveling from nearby Mizoram.
121 soap boxes containing more than 1.5 kg of heroin were discovered by the police during a search operation. They were kept inside a drum. Two people who were transporting the illegal goods from Aizawl were detained.
The Assam Rifles intercepted a smuggling attempt, confiscated heroin worth Rs 60 lakh from Aizawl, and detained two women.
Based on specific intelligence, the Assam Rifles and the Special Narcotics Police Station CID (crime), Aizawl conducted a joint operation in the Sateek neighborhood on Monday.
Nine soap cases (120 grams) of heroin (No. 4) worth Rs 60 lakh were seized during the operation. One of the two women who have been arrested is a citizen of Myanmar, according to Assam Rifles.
