6 Killed, Several Trapped After Massive Avalanche Hits Sikkim
GANGTOK: On 4th April, after an avalanche struck in the 14th mile of the Jawaharlal Nehru route that connects Gangtok and Nathula. Six fatalities have been reported as of now.

According to sources, an avalanche that hit the area and caused a tourist bus to crash into a steep valley left four men, one woman, and one kid dead. More than 150 people are reportedly stranded in the knee-deep snow, as per the reports. 

Locals are trying to rescue the tourists who are stranded in the snow in the meantime. Teams involved in additional rescue operations have been made aware of the event. The Sikkim Police have arrived and are conducting rescue efforts.

At least 50 additional tourists were stranded until 3 p.m. According to officials, the Army, state police, and neighbourhood volunteers came to their aid. Since March, Sikkim has seen constant snowfall, and travel was prohibited up to the 13th mile on JN Road, which leads to the Nathula pass.

 Although tourists were only allowed to ascend to the 13th mile, according to Sikkim government officials, many of them had already reached the 15th mile when the avalanche struck.

As many as 22 tourists have been rescued till now including six from deep valley and shifted to near by hospitals. As per the preliminary information incident took place around 12.20 pm. Nathu La Pass is situated on the border with China and is a major tourist destination because of its scenic beauty.

An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a slope, such as a hill or mountain. On Sunday morning, authorities reported an avalanche on the mountain opposite Shooling hamlet in the tribal Lahaul and Spiti district's Gondhla area. They claimed that because the region was uninhabited, no injuries or property losses were reported.
