GANGTOK: Troops of the Trishakti Corps continued their assistance to stranded tourists at Chungthang, North Sikkim, on the second day after a bridge was swept away due to landslides triggered by heavy rains, the Trishakti Corps and Indian Army said. According to the Indian Army, assistance was provided on the second day to 300 stranded tourists who came down from Lachung and Lachen. Food, places to rest, and medical comfort are also being provided to the stranded tourists. “Troops of TrishaktiCorps continued assistance to stranded tourists at Chungthang, North Sikkim. On the second day of the rescue effort, assistance was provided to 300 stranded tourists who came down from Lachung and Lachen. Assistance to cross over the temporary bridge, food, a place to rest, and medical comfort are provided,” Trishakti Corps, Indian Army, said in a tweet. A bus carrying tourists departed from landslide-hit Pegong in Mangan district after heavy rains lashed North Sikkim a day earlier, police said on Saturday. “The first bus with 19 men, 15 women, and 4 children departed from the landslide-hit Pegong in Mangan district for the state capital Gangtok,” a Sikkim police officer said. The official said that a total of 72 tourists had been evacuated so far by two buses. Heavy rains lashed North Sikkim on June 16.

The Indian Army rescued about 3,500 tourists who were stranded at Chungthang in North Sikkim due to landslides and roadblocks, according to an official release on Saturday. (ANI)
