Teacher from Assam arrested for posting derogatory remarks on PM Modi and Delhi violence

GUWAHATI: Souradeep Sengupta, a teacher at Silchar's Gurucharan (GC) College was arrested on Friday night after students of the college filed an FIR against him for posting derogatory remarks on PM Modi. The students also alleged that the remarks were communal in nature and were against Hinduism.

The teacher had posted remarks on FB in which he wrote, “People on the street are getting their IDs checked to see if they are Muslim – if they are, they are getting beaten mercilessly…All while these terrorists shout Jai Shree Ram. Sanatan Dharma my foot. We elected a mass murder twice as PM – this is what we get. Everyone who voted for BJP should know they sold the country off for a few bucks.”

In the post which has now been deleted he has drawn some similar comparison between Delhi violence and Gujarat riots.

After the teacher was slammed for his remarks, he posted an apology in which he said, “I made some irresponsible comments about a communally sensitive issue. It was a lapse of judgment…My intention was not to insult any religion at large.”

Meanwhile, students gathered outside his house and hurled abuses at his family while accusing them of not bringing him up well.

A few days ago, sporadic incidents of stone-pelting between anti and pro-CAA groups at Maujpur in east Delhi broke a relative lull in tension over the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act. The police fired teargas shells. The tension erupted after a pro-CAA rally in the area was stoned by a group of anti-CAA protesters. Following stone-pelting by both groups, the police stepped in to disperse the two groups.

Metro stations have been shut down in the area as a precautionary measure. Metro rail stations that have been shut down include the Maujpur-Babarpur and the Seelampur metro station, adding to the overall congestion and chaos prevailing in the area. More security forces are being directed to the spot from other areas including nearby Jaffrabad.
