36 Girls at Tripura Govt. Orphanage test COVID Positive, Agartala Under Curfew from 17 May

Agartala: 36 girls were tested positive for COVID-19 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Valika Niwas in Agartala. The incident has forced the state government to consider stricter measures to break the infection chain.

Sources said that the children at the State Children Home for Girls were tested as part of the ongoing Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) being conducted in all municipal wards.

The orphanage under the Social Welfare and Social Education Department has two units in the same compound located at Ujan Abhoynagar. Girls aged between 7 and 16 from both the units tested positive. The health official said that they have been kept in isolation and their health condition is stable.

Meanwhile, the Tripura government has decided to impose curfew in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas with effect from 5 AM on May 17 (Monday) till 26 May.

"The spread of the virus has become a cause of concern as the graph of the West Tripura district shows more than 70% of cases in the last 15 days. The district which comprises a large part of AMC has reported 502 cases out of the total 1,001 positive cases in the last two days, which is alarming," the source said.

Tripura recorded 449 new cases and three deaths over the last 24 hours. Most infections were detected in Agartala.
