AGARTALA: After 2 long years gap due to COVID-19, the bus service from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka of Bangladesh will now resume from the upcoming week.

The assistant high commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala has already issued visas for the passengers to travel from the capital city of Tripura to Kolkata.

The Tripura government officials confirmed that the Maitree bus service of the TRTC (Tripura Road Transport Corporation) will start operating from Wednesday 20 April.

According to official reports, bus service connecting Agartala and Kolkata through Dhaka will resume after both countries Bangladesh and India withdrew the restrictions on the movement of passengers via Akhaura and Benapole land ports of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh authority has not yet given any official confirmation about resuming the bus service from Tripura to Kolkata from next year.

The transport official of Bangladesh will operate a bus from the Salt Lake of Kolkata through Dhaka with the destination being Tripura's Agartala.

It may be mentioned that the bus service from Tripura to Kolkata was first introduced in the year 1999.

Bangladesh has proposed a direct bus service from Tripura's Agartala to Chattagram through the largest and capital city of the country, Dhaka.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has also proposed another bus service from Agartala to Cox's Bazar on the southeast coast of Bangladesh.

Pranjit Singha Roy, the Tripura Road Transport Minister speaking about the proposed bus service said that the transport ministry is currently working on the proposals. He added that it will be feasible once the Indian government gives approval.

In this regard, the Bangladesh tour operators are asked to take up the matter with their concerned authority and the government said Tripura Road Transport Minister Pranjit Singha Roy.
