AGARTALA: Dr Manik Saha officially tendered his resignation on Friday to the Governor of Tripura Satyadev Narayan Arya after the counting was completed on Thursday. The Bharatiya Janata Party under Dr Manik Saha was able to bag a single party majority in the Northeastern state in the recently concluded polling process.

The Bharatiya Janata Party retained the government of Tripura as it won 32 seats out of the total 60-seat Tripura state assembly. Its pre-poll alliance partner, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura also managed to grab a seat in the polls. The first-timer TIPRA Motha Party bagged a total of 13 seats making it the second biggest player in the assembly.

After submitting his resignation from the post of Chief Minister of the state at the Raj Bhawan of Agartala, Dr Manik Saha mentioned that the governor had requested him to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister of the state till the new state government takes the oath. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to take place on March 8, which coincides with the Hindu festival of colours.

Earlier many central ministers including the prime minister of the country had thanked the people of the state for electing his party back to power. While lauding the efforts of the volunteers, Narendra Modi tweeted, “Thank you, Tripura! This is a vote for progress and stability. BJP Tripura will continue to boost the state's growth trajectory. I am proud of all Tripura BJP Karyakartas for their spectacular efforts at the grassroots.”

Meanwhile the TIPRA Motha Party has decided to form the opposition in the state. Talking about the plans with the assembly, Pradyot Manikya Deb Barman mentioned, “we are the second largest party so we will sit in the constructive opposition but will not sit with CPM or Congress. We can sit independently. We will help the government whenever they need.”
