AGARTALA: The Chief Monk of the World Buddhist Pope Association of South Korea will visit the Northeast Indian state of Tripura to flag off the construction of an International Buddhist University in the state.
Named the Dhamma Dipa International Buddhist University, this institution is expected to become the first Buddhist-run university in modern-day India. It will be located at Manu Bankul in Sabroom in South Tripura. It will offer multiple courses and disciplines including Buddhist education. And Shakya Gasan the Chief Monk of the World Buddhist Pope Association of South Korea will lay the foundation stone of the project tomorrow, November 29. Dhammapiya, the Secretary General of the International Buddist Confederation made this announcement.
The secretary general also mentioned that Dalai Lama also sends his blessings for the upcoming project and wished it to be a success. The vice president of India is also expected to grace the event.
"Apart from Shakya Gasan Bhikkhu from South Korea, who would join as chief guest, we shall have Bhikkshuni Mani, who is an eminent Buddhist nun from South Korea. We shall be having guests from Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and from Canada", he added.
Dhammapiya is also the chairman of the Bahujan Hitaya Education Trust. He was instrumental in developing the international Buddhist University in the Northeast Indian state. The entire project is expected to cost around Rs 100 Cr which will be handled by the Buddhist Community.
Reports say that the organisation wishes to start the classes as soon as possible under the University Grants Commission norms. While the necessary infrastructure is being created, classes can be carried out from rented infrastructure if possible.
Although it was born in India, Buddhism now has a very limited number of followers in the country. And the majority of them belong to the states of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram
