AGARTALA: In a shocking incident, unidentified fraudsters pretending to be Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Minister tried to defraud officials and other contacts of the minister.
According to reports the unknown fraudsters acting as minister demanded money from a few officials by sending a WhatsApp message.
The racketeers used an unknown number but on the Whatsapp message, it appeared as Tripura minister so that the contacts fall into the trap.
As the matter came to light, Tripura Minister of Information and Cultural Affairs Sushanta Chowdhury took no time to approach the police officials for an investigation.
Meanwhile, the number used by the racketeers to con the minister's contacts has been put under surveillance as informed by the police sources.
According to Sushanta Chowdhury, the mastermind and other people behind this racket are making efforts to harm his image by using his name to collect money.
The minister's office also issued a notice in this regard where it was mentioned that the fraudsters attempted to take a huge amount of money from Chowdhury's contacts.
In the statement, the minister wrote that one of his friends informed him over a phone call that such a racket is active and demanding money through WhatsApp.
It is further informed that the cybercrime unit of the Tripura police has taken cognizance of the matter and initiated an inquiry to find out the racketeers involved in the fraud case.
The minister in the statement issued on Wednesday 20 April also appealed to the citizens of Tripura not to get trapped in such fraud attempts and asked them to be vigilant.
He added in case someone receives such messages that seek money they must immediately contact the police department to avoid further loss.
