Agartala: A man in Tripura, identified as Ranjit Ghosh, has been sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment for torturing his wife. The court had passed the sentence 16 years after Ghosh was accused in the bride-murder case. Ghosh will as also have to pay a fine of Rs.10,000. The order was passed by a judge of a lower court after hearing the testimony of 26 people.
According to sources, Ghosh had allegedly been torturing his wife. Unable to bear so much suffering, his wife, who was named Bipula Majumdar Ghosh, killed herself by drinking poison on March 1, 2005. This case has been reported from the Haripur area of the Hrishyamukh block of the Belonia sub-division.
A case was later lodged by the victim's brother at the Belonia Police Station stating that Ghosh had been abusing Bipula mentally and physically for money.
Ranjit Ghosh had been absconding since 2007. He finally surrendered before the court on Friday after living like a fugitive for a couple of years.
On Friday, the Belonia District Tripura and Sessions Judge Court sentenced Ranjit Ghosh to imprisonment for seven years along with a fine of Rs. 10,000 after hearing the testimony of 26 people. This is also accompanied by three months of rigorous imprisonment under Section 304 (B) of the Indian Penal Code.
