AGARTALA: The chief minister of Tripura, Manik Saha inaugurated the first film and television institution in the state on Monday.

The institution has been named the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute after the great filmmaker and writer. It is located in the Nazrul Kalakshetra region in the capital city of Agartala in Tripura and is expected to help the youth of the state who have a passion to go towards that field.

"One's talent cannot be developed fully without proper infrastructure. There are many youths in the state who have cultural talent. But they need a proper platform for nurturing the talent. Hope, both teachers, and students contribute towards the success of the institute," mentioned the chief minister in his statement.

Jishnu Dev Varma mentioned the age-old connection of the state to the Hindi film industry as the music genus Sachin Dev Barman belonged to the lineage of the erstwhile Manikya Dynasty of the state. The deputy chief minister himself is a member of the royal family of Tripura.

The new institution and its future students are expected to shine the limelight on the rich heritage of the state. It will also encourage more and more youth from the state to highlight their traditions infront of a larger public. Sushanta Chowdhury, the Minister of Information and Cultural Affairs of the state also expressed his hope that this new institution will improve the socio-economic condition of the state.

Himangshu Sekhar Kathua has been appointed as the director of this institution. He announced that the classes will begin from the first week of December itself and that the first batch comprises a total of 47 students. Also, according to reports, students will bear only 10% of the course fees, while the rest will be borne by the state.

The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute received a sum of Rs 5. 76 Cr from the state government. It will start with short-term courses and gradually introduce diploma as well as degree courses. These include screen acting, film appreciation, production, and management along with news reporting, anchoring and newsroom automation As of now, four short-term courses have been started in the institution.
