AGARTALA: Rajya Sabha MP Manik Saha has been appointed as the new chief minister of Tripura after Biplab Deb stepped down from the post on Saturday.
A dentist by profession, Saha is also the Tripura BJP president who quit Congress and joined the saffron camp in 2016.
This development comes after Biplab Kumar Deb submitted his resignation to Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya.
The state is set to go to the polls early next year. "We need to keep the BJP in power for long in Tripura," Biplab Deb said post his resignation on Saturday.
He added, "The party [BJP] is above all. I have worked for the party under the leadership and direction of PM Modi. I have tried to do justice to the people of Tripura as the head of the party's state unit and as CM. I have tried to ensure peace, and development and steer the state out of the Covid crisis."
Taking to his Twitter handle, former Tripura CM Biplab Deb wrote "Congratulations and best wishes to @DrManikSaha2 ji on being elected as the legislature party leader. I believe under PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's vision and leadership Tripura will prosper."
The resignation comes a day after Biplab Kumar Deb met Union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The decision regarding his resignation, according to sources, came from the BJP's leadership.
