AGARTALA: Sourav Ganguly, a legendary figure in Indian cricket, is going to take on the role of brand ambassador for Tripura, a state governed by the BJP. The choice was made during a meeting the former Indian captain had on Tuesday at his residence in Kolkata with Sushanta Chowdhury, the minister responsible for tourism in Tripura.
"I am ready, the fine prints will be fixed by tonight," Ganguly said after the meeting.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated, "It's a matter of great pride that the former captain of the Indian cricket team Shri Sourav Ganguly ji has accepted our proposal to be the brand ambassador of Tripura Tourism. Had a telephonic conversation with him today. I am confident that Shri Ganguly ji's participation will definitely give an impetus to the state's tourism sector."
The action is intended to increase tourism in the state, according to Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, who met with the cricket star in the company of senior government officials. Chowdhury thinks that having a well-known person like him serve as the brand ambassador will be extremely beneficial to Tripura's tourism industry.
“Our Tripura state tourism needs a lot of promotion and proper branding to take it to the world and for that, we need a popular brand ambassador who is known all over the world! Who could be a more popular personality than our beloved Dada Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, to promote Tripura's tourism to the world?”, the Tourism Minister said.
According to Chowdhury, Ganguly is planned to travel to London at the beginning of next month. Immediately after arriving back in India, he might travel to Tripura at the end of June to begin working on his new role.
Chowdhury added, "Meantime we shall complete the agreement and documentation procedure within the next two weeks".
The action is notable since Sourav Ganguly, who is reputed to be close to Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had never received a proposal of this nature from the West Bengal government. Bengal appointed Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan as their brand ambassador. In addition, Ganguly formerly played for the Kolkata Knight Riders, SRK's IPL team.
In 2015, after Jagmohan Dalmiya passed away, Ganguly was elected president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, and Mamata Banerjee played a significant part in that decision.
