Tripura Govt to Release Prisoners Under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Scheme

AGARTALA: To commemorate the state's 75th anniversary of independence, the Tripura government would release inmates who have served two-thirds of their jail terms under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav programme, an official said on Wednesday.

Five inmates, including notorious felon Amit Saha, were previously given special forgiveness and released from the central detention facility in West Tripura in two stages.

According to Apurba Kumar Chakraborty, OSD to Department of Prisons, “For those who have served 66% of their sentence and acted responsibly, we have started a process for extraordinary remission. In accordance with a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in honour of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, this is being done.”

Chakraborty, however, refused to say how many inmates whose names had been put forward for the special remission that is expected to be finished by August 15 and are being held in various jails throughout the northeastern state. 14 jails currently house 1,335 convicts, despite the facility's capacity of 2,365. " We provide the greatest therapeutic options for the detainees. Additionally, occasionally, the district jails host special health camps.” Chakraborty continued.

There are currently 14 correctional facilities in Tripura, including the central correctional facility, according to Tapash Roy, secretary of the prisons under the facility (Jail) Department, who was speaking at a news conference this evening. The combined capacity of these 14 facilities is 2,365 inmates.

In 2022, Up to 15 life-sentenced inmates were pardoned and released for the first time in Tripura after being judged to be in the right, officials said. According to the officials, the pardoned inmates include two ladies and an Agra-based CRPF jawan. In the presence of the state minister for prisons Ram Prasad Paul and senior jail authorities, 14 of the 15 inmates were released from Bishalgarh Kendriya Sansodhanagar.
