AGARTALA: A significant population of Mizo people reside in the Jampui Hills region of the North District of Tripura and they came out in large numbers to observe a candlelight vigil program as they showed their support towards the members of the tribal communities in Manipur. They also prayed for those who lost their lives in the ethnic violence in the state of Manipur.

The Jampui Hill Joint NGO Committee organised this event and hundreds of people participated in the same. People belonging to various Mizo tribes took part in a solidarity march and displayed black flags in their houses. They also collected a fund of Rs 3 lakh towards the benefit of the people who have been affected by the recent violence.

The organisers also expressed deep anguish over the inhumane brutality towards the two helpless women of the Kuki-Zo community who were raped and paraded on the street and demanded the strictest of action against them. They also called this incident the ‘tip of the iceberg’ as there have been many incidents of loot, rape, torture, murder and custodial deaths in the past two and half months which have gone unreported and that the state government is suppressing the fundamental rights of the citizens by placing several sanctions including the internet ban.

They also demanded the immediate removal of N Biren Singh from the position of the chief minister of Manipur and enforce presidential rule. And thereafter initiate a proper inquiry into the negligence of duty and failure to protect the citizens of the state and alleged that he is responsible for the violence in the state and must be punished accordingly. They also demanded that the central government pay heed to the demands for a separate administration for the Kuki- Zo people in Manipur in line of the demands raised in the state.
