NORTH TRIPURA: The superintendent of police for the North Tripura district of the state of Tripura has expressed deep concerns regarding the propagation of narcotics in the state and said that most of them originated from the neighbouring country of Myanmar.

Bhanupada Chakraborty, the Superintendent of Police of the North Tripura district mentioned that the state of Tripura shares a 107 km long boundary with the state of Mizoram. This has been a major concern for the law enforcement agencies of Tripura as most of the narcotics captured in the state originate in Myanmar and enter the state through this border.

The police official also maintained that the authorities have increased surveillance along the border between the two neighbouring states of Northeast India to reduce the smuggling of such narcotics and its supply to the people of the state. He also mentioned that although law enforcement agencies are working around the clock to prevent narcotics trafficking, the miscreants continue to smuggle contraband, especially heroin into Tripura along the interstate border.

Previously, a one-day legal awareness on domestic violence, drugs and substance abuse was organized in Arunachal Pradesh under the aegis of APSCW by the Tayeng Welfare Society Women Wing (TWSWW) in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Siang and Mebo Sub-Divisional Administration on Friday at Government Higher Secondary School, Mebo. APSCW Chairperson, Kenjum Pakam addressing a large gathering of students, women among others, said that such dissemination of the various rights and provisions for the protection of women and children at the grass-root level will truly empower them by creating an enabling and supportive environment for them to seek redressal and support system adding the APSCW is committed such outreach efforts by stakeholders.

She also dwelt on the protection of women from sexual harassment at the workplace and provisions like the internal complaint committee. On the burning issue of drug abuse in society, the APSCW Chairperson said that the sustained collective efforts of parents, NGOs and all stakeholders for the future of the children will continue and lauded TWSWW led by president Yamen Panyang Tayeng and GS and former APSCW member Oter Tayeng for the initiative.
