2 Tripura State Rifles jawan have been killed when one of their colleagues opened fire indiscriminately. The accused has surrendered before the police with arms and ammunition.

Agartala: In an awful incident that unraveled in ONGC GCS situated at Madhupur in Tripura's Sephajala district, two jawans belonging to Tripura State Rifles (TSR) have been killed when one of their fellow colleagues opened fire in an indiscriminate manner.

The 2 martyred jawans and the accused belong to the 5th battalion of the TSR. According to Tripura Police, the accused jawan has surrendered before the police with arms and ammunition.

Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia and Naib Subedar Kiran Jamatia are the names of the deceased jawans. A compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the victim's families has been announced by the Tripura Chief Minister himself.

The CM paid tribute to the martyrs. "My homage to our brave personnel of Tripura State Rifles – Subedar Marka Singh Jamatia and Naib Subedar Kiran Jamatia who died while on duty today. Tripura government has decided to give Rs 5 Lakh each to bereaved families. They will also get benefits under the die-in-harness scheme," the CM said.

The reason behind this incident is unknown as of now and the police are investigating the matter.

The Tripura State Rifles (TRS) was formed to counter the surging insurgency in the state during the 1980s. It was raised on the pattern of Central Para Military Force (CPMF).  Subsequently, the Tripura Legislative Assembly passed the Tripura State Rifles act 1983. The first battalion came into existence on 12th March 1984 based on this act. Currently, there are 12 battalions of TSR in the state out of which 9 Battalions are India Reserve Battalions.
