Tripura TAADC moves to codify tribal customary laws

Agartala: The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is interested to codify customary laws of all the tribal communities of the State and necessary initiative has already been taken. Radha Charan Debbarma, Chief Executive Member of the council said this to a delegation of the Chakma Social Council who met him recently.

The delegation led by Niranjan Chakma submitted a memorandum to the CEM demanding codification of the Chakma customary laws. Radha Charan told the delegation that the TTAADC is very much concerned about the issue and work is going on.

On the Chakma customary law, he apprised the delegation that as per the CrPC and certain ruling of the Supreme Court there are some sensitive matter in the Chakma customary laws and the TTAADC has sent it to the State Law Department for clarification on August 22, 2019 and is waiting for a reply. The CEM advised the delegation to take up the matter with the State Government as the matter is lying there now.

The delegation agreed to redraft and submit the proposed law again if there are discrepancies in the law and where it may create legal complication. Debjani Chakma, Bimanjyoti Chakma and Sukhamoy Chakma also were in the delegation. Niranjan Chakma said they had a cordial discussion and hoped some step will be taken shortly.
