NEW DELHI: Both the user id and the password are essential components of a person's digital identity on any platform. Be it social media or finances, passwords must always be created in such a way that other people cannot predict them.
But people across the globe do not seem to pay as much attention to their digital security as they should. Common words are often used as passwords making them very vulnerable to cybercrimes.
NordPass, a software brand to manage passwords has mentioned that 'password' is the most popular password used across the world while '123456' remains a close second.
NordPass comes from the same brand NordVPN, one of the most popular Virtual Private Network providers in the world. Just like NordVPN, NordPass also has both personal and corporate clients.
"Compared to the data from 2021, 73% of the 200 most common passwords in 2022 remain the same. Furthermore, 83% of the passwords in this year's list can be cracked in less than a second," mentioned a report from the brand.
Other commonly used bad passwords include 'qwerty, '111111', '00000' and 'iloveyou'. The key point here is that all these can be cracked within a second by password crackers.
Although a majority of websites issue warnings against the use of weak passwords, very few people actually pay any heed to such warnings and the rest continue with easy-to-crack passwords.
India is one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to cyber security. Both people and organizations in the country continue as usual and often face the consequences in form of loss of money or important data. With the rise in the number of users as well as internet penetration in rural areas of the country, the number of online frauds is also increasing.
The use of long and unique passwords is one of the keys to cyber wellness. More and more websites are now allowing a 2FA or two-factor authentication that makes the system much safer and secure.
