Justice DY Chandrachud takes over as the 50th Chief Justice of India on Nov 9. Will serve common people: CJI Chandrachud. Born on November 11, 1959, was appointed Supreme Court judge on May 13, 2016. He was Former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court (2013-2016). His father Justice YV Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India (1978-1985). President Droupadi Murmu administers Oath of Office at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
DY Chandrachud succeeds 49th CJI UU Lalit who recommended him. Justice Chandrachud will have a tenure till November 10, 2024. Justice Chandrachud delivered several landmark judgments. This includes decriminalising Section 377, on Aadhaar, Sabarimala etc. Recently, a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud allowed unmarried women to have Medical Termination of Pregnancy
