Banarasi paan receives GI tag

The Geographical Indication (GI) tag signifies that products from a specific geographical area possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

As many as 33 products were granted GI certification by the GI Registry, Chennai on 31 March.

The famous Banarasi paan of Varanasi has entered the Geographical Indication (GI) list.

Revered for its taste and also made famous by Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic song ‘Khaike Paan Banaras Wala’, the celebrated Banarasi Paan received the geographical indication.

Owing to its unique taste and the burst of plentiful flavours make the Banarasi paan a hot favourite with millions.

The tags were first introduced in 2003, wherein Darjeeling Tea was the first Indian product to get a GI tag.
