SAN DIEGO: Top-seeded Andrey Rublev broke to begin each set and overpowered wild-card entry Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of the San Diego Open on Wednesday.

Andrey Rublev, fresh off helping Team Europe win the Laver Cup exhibition in Boston, used big forehands to take control of points from the baseline.

Rublev improved to 45-15 in 2021. He had a first-round bye at the hard-court tournament that was a late addition to the ATP calendar to make up for the cancellation of the tour's Asian swing because of the coronavirus pandemic. This was the first match against a Top 20 opponent for Nakashima, a 20-year-old from San Diego who is ranked 83rd. Agencies
