NEW DELHI: In a historic day for Indian shooting at the Asian Games 2023, Sift Kaur Simra and Ashi Chouksey secured gold and bronze medals, respectively, in the Women's 50m Rifle 3P Final on Wednesday, September 27. Notably, this victory marked India's first-ever gold medal in this event in the tournament's history.
Samra's performance was nothing short of exceptional, as she amassed a total of 469.6 points, shattering the previous world record of 467. Chouksey, on the other hand, displayed remarkable resilience, initially languishing in sixth place but eventually clinching the third spot with 451.9 points. Her determination pushed her up the ranks, making her a bronze medalist.
China's Qiongyue presented fierce competition, securing the second position with 462.3 points and earning a well-deserved silver medal.
Earlier in the day, Chouksey and Samra were integral members of the Indian team that triumphed in the Women's 50m Rifle 3P team event. Unfortunately, Manini Kaushik, also part of the team, faced disappointment in the individual event, finishing in the 18th position.
In the team event, India accumulated a total score of 1764, a mere nine points behind China, who clinched the gold. The Republic of Korea secured the bronze with 1756 points.
Samra's journey to the gold medal included setting a new national record with an impressive score of 594 during the qualification round. This score earned her a second-place finish, narrowly missing the top spot to China's Xia Siyu due to fewer inner 10s.
Chouksey's determination was evident as she too advanced to the individual final, finishing sixth in the qualification round with 590 points. Kaushik, however, faced challenges and landed in the 18th place with a score of 580 points.
The day continued to bring glory to India as Esha Singh, Manu Bhaker, and Rhythm Sangwan secured the gold medal in the Women's 25m Rapid-Fire Pistol team event. In a closely-fought contest, they managed to outperform China, solidifying India's dominance in shooting sports.
With these outstanding performances, India has now equaled its medal tally of nine from the Jakarta Asian Games in 2018. This achievement underscores the country's growing prominence in the field of shooting and sets a remarkable milestone in the history of the Asian Games.
