GUWAHATI: Assam boxer Shiva Thapa made a good start in the 36th National Games winning his first round bout against Aniket Jonardan of Gujarat in Ahmedabad today. Shiva, known for his swift movements in the ring, warmed up in style by recording a 5-0 unanimous verdict win in the men's 67 kg category.

In a brief reaction after the Bout Shiva said, "The National Games is the perfect platform to assess the talent in your weight category across the country. Every bout is important, it doesn't matter who the opponent is, we treat everyone as equal."

He also added: "As the weight divisions have changed there are many boxers who have come up from the 63.5kg to 67kg and many from higher weights have come down, so the competition level has automatically gone up."

In the women's section another Assam boxer Manju Basumatary entered into the second round beating Hitol Sunderji Damak of Gujarat by 5-0.

Assam are now in 14th position in the medals tally collecting six gold, seven silver and three bronze medals.
