Assam & Maharashtra to field biggest contingents in Khelo India Youth Games in Guwahati

The host state of Assam along with Maharashtra will field biggest contingents during the upcoming third edition of Khelo India Youth Games to be organized in Guwahati from January 10 to 22.

According to a PTI report, Assam will field 656 athletes and former champions Maharashtra will field 751 athletes.

"We are participating in all disciplines in the tournament," Chief De Mission of Assam, Navajyoti Basumatary told reporters.

"Our preparations are being carried out very well. We are hoping to finish in the top 10 this time. We have strong teams in boxing, swimming, football, cycling, and shooting among others. We are hoping for medals in these disciplines. I am sure the home crowd will be a big boost for our athletes. The competition will create a sporting environment in Assam and inspire the youth to take up sports," he said.

The initiative has been lauded by many in the field of sports.

Arjuna awardee and national table tennis champion Monalisa Baruah Mehta has lauded the Khelo India Youth Games initiative by the sports ministry. The former table tennis player from Assam said that the competition is reviving the sporting culture in India. She stressed the fact that the Khelo India Youth Games are a great opportunity for all the athletes to showcase their talent.
