GUWAHATI: Ace sprinter Hima Das received the appointment letter for the post of DSP in Assam Police at a ceremonial function at the KarmabirNabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor stadium here on Friday. The appointment is given under the Integrated Sports Policy of the Assam Government. Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal attended the function as the chief guest.
Hima was accompanied by her parents at the function which was also attended by several former international players, top officials of Assam Police and bureaucrats.
Addressing the gathering after her induction as DSP, the sprinter said that she would continue to strive for excellence in her sport alongside her job in the State police force.
"I got everything due to sports and will try to work for betterment of sports in the State. I will diligently work for Assam Police but I must say sports will never take the back seat."
The athlete is now busy for her preparations for the forthcoming Olympic Games and is undergoing training at Patiala. Yesterday she bagged a gold medal in 200mts in the 2nd Indian Grand Prix at Patiala, her first competitive race in more than a year, with timing 23.31 sec. Another Assam girl TunlaiNarzary also collected a bronze medal in the women Shot Put event on Thursday.
Hima in a brief speech in the function also revealed that she did harbour a wish to become a police officer one day and her mother always inspired her to fulfill the wish. "During Puja when we had gone out I always demanded a gun to my mother. She told me to work in Assam police and become a good person," said 'Dhing Express'.
Meanwhile, addressing the gathering Chief Minister Sonowal said, "Hima's appointment as DSP will motivate the youth to pursue excellence in sports."
Member Secretary of SLAC for Sports and Youth Welfare LakhyaKonwar, Chief Secretary JishnuBaruah, DGP BhaskarjyotiMahanta, ADGP Dr. LR Bishnoi also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, Sonowal unveiled a life-size statue of KarmabirNabin Chandra Bordoloi which was installed by Assam Sports Journalists' Welfare Association under the aegis of the freedom fighters' family at Sarusajai Sports Complex.
