Assam's Devajit Saikia Becomes BCCI Joint Secretary

GUWAHATI: The new executive body of the Board of Cricket Control in India has been declared in an event held in Mumbai and Assam's Devajit Saikia has been named the Joint Secretary. Before taking this position, he was the secretary of the Indian Cricket Association.

Roger Binny, the star of the first Cricket World Cup won by India in 1983 was elected the president of the Board of Cricket Control in India. He replaces former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly for the position. Jay Shah retains his position as secretary. Ashish Shelar is the new treasurer, Rajeev Shukla is the vice president and Devajit Saikia becomes the joint secretary. Previous term treasurer, Arun Dhumal is the new chairman of the Indian Premier League. Sourav Ganguly who completed this three-year term was previously offered the position of the chairman of IPL. He declined the same and wants to contest for the position of head of the Cricket Association of Bengal.

The Board of Cricket Control in India is the apex body for the sport in the country. Being the representing body of the biggest cricketing nation in the world, the body has quite a good position in the International Cricket Council which happens to be biggest authority of the sport. As the head of BCCI, Roger Binny will be the new face of India in the ICC.

Guwahati has a state-of-the-art cricket stadium with all the necessary facilities needed to play international cricket. But due to a variety of reasons, the number of international matches played in the stadium has remained limited to just two over the years. With Devajit Saikia in the top management of the BCCI, a lot of cricketers and fans now expect to see more matches, not only in Guwahati but in the Northeast region in the coming time.

The state government under Himanta Biswa Sarma is already taking a keen interest in the development of the sports infrastructure across the state. They have organized multiple sporting competitions including the Assam Youth Olympics.
