Guwahati: Assam boxer Shiva Thapa has secured his place in the Indian boxing team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games along with World championship medalist Amit Panghal after the duo had emerged victorious in the trials which was held in Patiala on June 2.
Thapa bagged the 63.5kg spot in the trials held at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports while Panghal, the 2019 world championship silver medallist, sealed his place in the 51kg division.
The 2015 world championship bronze medalist Thapa, who was recently elected as a member of the IBA Athletes Committee, outclassed the 2018 CWG silver medalist Manish Kaushik 5-0 to secure his spot at the quadrennial event.
The other six boxers who earned their place in the Indian team include 2018 bronze medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), reigning national champion Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar (92kg+).
Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Games is slated to take place in Birmingham in England from July 28 to August 8.
Earlier, India had finished second in the 2018 edition of the sporting extravaganza, winning nine medals in total, which included three gold, three silver and three bronze.
Notably, the women's trials for the Games will be conducted next week.
