KOHIMA: In a bid to increase the popularity of sports and overall development in his state, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced cash incentives for all the sportspersons from the state who win medals in the second North East Olympics.
The second North East Olympics will be held in the city of Shillong. The host state for this version of this sporting event will be the state Meghalaya. The games are scheduled to flag off on November 10 and wind up by November 16 this year.
The state of Nagaland is sending a large contingent of 305 players from different sporting disciplines to this event. And they are confident of winning a big tally of awards and cash prizes have been offered for all the winners.
Addressing the sportspersons from the state team at the send-off ceremony on Thursday, Neiphiu Rio made this announcement. He is also the president of the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA). He mentioned cash rewards of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 for gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
"The Northeast Olympics will be a launching pad for each of you and will provide you with opportunities to grow. We believe in you all and want you to do well," Neiphiu Rio said.
Neiphiu Rio also mentioned that the state government is making all necessary efforts to boost sports infrastructure in the state. The players of the state will have access to world-class equipment and resources for practising.
Nagaland Olympic Association secretary general Abu Metha mentioned that Nagaland's sports contingent is the largest in the games.
The first edition of the North East Olympics was hosted by Manipur in the year 2018.
Assam and Manipur also conducted inter-district sports meets recently, just before the 36th National Games was hosted by Gujarat. The idea behind these competitions is to encourage a variety of sports and games across the country as well as bring medals from international competitions.
