GUWAHATI: After COVID-19 break Mr. Saraighat RG Baruah Memorial All India Classic Body Building Championship will be back again this year. This time the competition would be held at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium on May 1. In a conversation with The Sentinel the general secretary of the organizing body Bhabajyoti Goswami highlighted the preparation, awards and some other areas of the meet. Here is tie excerpts.
The Sentinel (TS): This year Mr. Saraighat would be held as per schedule…
Goswami: Yes. We have planned to organize the event in the next month after a gap of one year because of COVID-19. Like the previous editions this time also Mr. Saraighat, Assam would be held simultaneously with this championship.
TS: What are the responses of outstation body builders?
Goswami: It's very good. National Championship and Federation Cup would be held this month in two separate venues. So most of the inform body builders, who would participate in those two meets, are interested to take part in our competition and many of them already started to contact us.
TS: Body building has now earned popularity among the women in the State. Do you have any plan for them?
Goswami: Yes. It is very true that women in good numbers have started to join in this game. In the last State Championship there were nine women participants. Sabita Bania and Guriya Khatun, both from Kamrup, will represent Assam in the Federation Cup Championship which will begin in Lucknow on Sunday. So we too have decided to introduce one new competition- Sports Model Physique- for women this year in the Mr Saraight RG Baruah Memorial All India classic Body Building Championship.
TS: What about the prize money of the Mr. Saraighat.
Goswami: Total prize Money for the Mr. Saraighat RG Baruah Memorial All India Classic Body Building Championship is Rs 5 lakh 85 thousand and first ten position winners will receive cash awards. Mr Saraighat will be richer by Rs one lakh 50 thousand. 2nd and third best body builders will earn Rs One lakh and Rs 80 thousand respectively. In Mr. Saraighat (Assam) category champion will collect a purse of Rs 30,000 and first prize winner in women category will earn Rs 25,000.
