GUWAHATI: She created three National records in the 2nd Khelo India National Women Ranking Weightlifting Championship held at Modi Nagar in Uttar Pradesh on Friday. Panchami Sonowal, the promising weightlifter of the State who hails from Amulguri at Dhemaji, spoke for a while to The Sentinel from Modi Nagar after her record breaking performance. Here is the excerpt.

The Sentinel (TS): Share your record breaking moment.

Panchami: I am really happy. It was my first gold medal at the national level championship and on my way to win the medal I also created three national records. Can't express my feelings!

(TS): Tell us details about the records.

Panchami: I participated in the 49kg category and created three records in snatch, jerk and in total. In the snatch and jerk I lifted 68kg and 92 kg respectively which took the total weight, which I lifted, to 160 kg. It is my second medal in Khelo India. Earlier, I won a silver medal in the Khelo India National Women Ranking Weightlifting Championship held at Himachal Pradesh.

(TS): Your involvement in the game...

Panchami: It's for the last three to four years I am seriously working to develop my game. I already took part in Inter District Tournaments which were held at Haflong, Biswanath and Guwahati respectively. I bagged best weightlifter titles in different categories in all the three competitions.

(TS): Share your training programme.

Panchami: Actually there are not too many facilities for this game at Dhemaji. It is Duljit Boruah sir of Sivasagar, who guides me from time to time and I am shaping my career under his guidance. I am thankful to the Assam Weightlifting Association also. However I need a little financial support which can help me to develop my game further.

(TS): What about the future plan?

Panchami: I will work hard and try to win medals in the forthcoming national Weightlifting Championship which is scheduled to be held in December. At the same time I want to represent India in the big international events like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games etc.
